About
Durk van der Meer (1978). Freelance digital artist living in Curaçao, an island in the Caribbean.
I build and design worlds and characters, and everything that goes with them, for publishers, game and film studios, brands and festivals. From a first sketch to a finished 3D model, a book cover, a playable VR world or an animated short. Most of my work starts in VR and ends wherever it needs to: print, screen, game engine or headset.
Available for commissions. I work remotely from Curaçao with clients worldwide. Shoot me a message on info@durkatwork.com. Work with me →
I started out as an architectural visualizer and gradually shifted to becoming an illustrator and virtual world builder — creating levels, characters and other assets for animated movies, games, animations and installations.
My virtual world Suku won Best Art World at Raindance Immersive 2024, was part of Venice Immersive at the Venice Film Festival 2024, and won the Virtual Worlds Competition at NewImages Festival in France.
I've been creating the Aku project with Micah Johnson since 2021, for which I illustrated the cover of TIME magazine.
For the Aku books — Aku: Journey to Ibra and Aku: Battle for Pyra, published by Penguin Random House — I illustrated the covers and interior illustrations, and contributed significantly to the story. Aku: Journey to Ibra is a Junior Library Guild selection and a New York Times bestseller.
Selected film credits include early visual development and world-building for the award-winning feature Miss Moxy, and character and 3D asset creation for the Gouden Kalf-winning animated short Polska Warrior.
